Why Does My Boiler Keep Turning Off With No Error Code?

If your boiler keeps turning itself off but the display shows no error code, it can be incredibly frustrating. The heating may come on for a few minutes, then shut down again, leaving the house chilly and hot water unreliable.

Understanding intermittent boiler shutdowns

This issue is different from a boiler that will not fire at all or one where the pressure keeps dropping. In many homes, the boiler will start normally, run for a short while, then stop, sometimes starting again a few minutes later.

Because there is no fault code, the boiler usually believes everything is “within limits”, so the cause is often outside the boiler itself. That means controls, circulation problems, or safety cut-outs that reset themselves.

  • When does it happen: only on heating, only on hot water, or both?

One of the most common reasons a boiler stops with no error code is that it has simply been told to stop, even if the house does not feel warm. That signal often comes from the thermostat or programmer.

For traditional controls, check that the programmer is actually set to “on” at the time it turns off. Make sure the room thermostat is turned up higher than the current room temperature and that no one has changed schedules or holiday settings.

Smart thermostat dropouts

Smart thermostats and wireless receivers can lose connection, which makes the boiler cycling very confusing. The boiler may come on when the signal gets through, then stop when the signal is lost, all without any fault code.

Check for Wi-Fi or signal icons on the thermostat, and look at the app to see if it shows “no connection” or similar. Try power cycling the thermostat and its receiver, and ensure the batteries (if fitted) are fresh. Airlocks in the heating system

Air trapped in the pipework can block circulation and cause short cycling. Radiators that are cold at the top but warm at the bottom often point to air in the system.
