What should you consider when replacing your boiler?

If it is time to change your boiler, you need to decide what type of boiler is right for you. Here are some things to consider.

Understanding Your Heating Needs

Determining your heating requirements is the first step towards replacing your boiler. Assess factors such as the size of your home, the number of occupants, and your hot water usage patterns to determine the appropriate boiler size and type for your needs.

Fuel type

If you have mains gas, a gas boiler is likely to be the cheapest heating option. Natural gas is the most widely-used heating fuel in the UK, it's also the cheapest option available to consumers (per kW according to Energy Saving Trust figures when compared to oil, economy 7, LPG and house coal).

Boiler type

Most old gas boilers are regular boilers that have a separate hot water cylinder to store hot water, rather than providing it directly from the boiler. When you replace your boiler, you can buy a new regular boiler, and keep your hot water cylinder, or buy a combi boiler that doesn't need a cylinder.

A regular boiler is more efficient than a combi at producing hot water in the first place, but then some heat is lost from the hot water cylinder, so a combi may be more efficient overall. Which is better for you will depend on different things. We are happy to offer a free site survey where we will discuss your heating and hot water usage. We can then provide you with accurate advice and information on the different options available to best suit your needs and maximise your energy savings, whilst keeping within budget.

Location of the boiler

You can change the location of your new boiler installation. New boilers are made with superior materials and technology and can produce a lot less noise than older boilers. This can be beneficial if space is limited in your kitchen and you would prefer your boiler installed in a living or sleeping area of your home.

Assessing Installation Costs

The cost of installing a new boiler can vary depending on factors such as the type of boiler, the complexity of the installation, and any additional components or upgrades required. Obtain multiple quotes from reputable HVAC contractors to compare prices and ensure you get the best value for your investment.

Evaluating Long-Term Maintenance

Regular maintenance is essential to ensure your boiler operates efficiently and reliably for years to come. Consider the long-term maintenance requirements of different boiler models, including servicing intervals and the availability of replacement parts, to make an informed decision.

Ensuring Safety Compliance

Safety should always be a top priority when replacing your boiler. Choose a licensed and experienced installer who adheres to safety regulations and industry best practices. Additionally, ensure your new boiler meets all relevant safety standards and certifications to protect your home and family.

Considering Environmental Impact

Environmental sustainability is becoming increasingly important in heating system choices. Look for boilers with low emissions and high efficiency ratings to minimise your carbon footprint and contribute to a greener future for the planet.
