If your Vaillant boiler has suddenly stopped working and is showing an F28 fault code, it usually means the boiler has tried to light but has not detected a flame. In simple terms, the gas is not successfully igniting, so the boiler locks out to keep you safe.
What the Vaillant F28 fault code actually means
F28 is an ignition fault. The boiler opens the gas valve and fires the ignition spark, then checks for a flame. If it cannot detect that flame, it shuts itself down and shows F28 on the display.
This can be caused by something straightforward, such as no gas supply, or by a more technical problem inside the boiler. Some checks are safe for you to do, while others must only be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Checks you can safely do yourself
Before calling an engineer, there are a few basic things you can look at around your home. These do not involve opening the boiler or touching gas components, so they are safe for most homeowners.
Quick checklist for F28 at home
Check your gas supply and other gas appliances
Make sure any prepayment meter has enough credit
Look for signs of a frozen condensate pipe in cold weather
Try a single boiler reset once only
Check your gas supply
First, see if other gas appliances are working, such as your gas hob or gas fire. If these are not lighting either, you may have a gas supply issue rather than a boiler fault.
Check that the gas at the meter is turned on. The lever should usually be in line with the pipe to be on. If you are unsure, do not force anything; leave it as it is and call a Gas Safe engineer.
If you have a prepayment gas meter
If you use a prepayment meter, make sure you have sufficient credit and that the meter has not cut off your supply. Top up if necessary, insert your card or key correctly, and confirm that gas is flowing again.
After restoring credit, you may need to wait a few moments, then try one reset of the boiler to see if the F28 fault clears.
Look for a frozen condensate pipe
In cold weather, a very common cause of F28 is a frozen condensate pipe. This is the plastic pipe that usually runs from the bottom of your boiler to an outside drain. If it freezes, the boiler may lock out with an F28 or similar fault.
Outside, look for a white or light coloured plastic pipe and check whether it feels very cold, is covered in ice, or has obvious blockages. If you think it is frozen, you can try to thaw it gently using warm water.
How to safely thaw a frozen condensate pipe
Fill a jug or watering can with warm water from the tap. It should be warm to the touch, not boiling. Slowly pour the warm water along the length of the outside section of the pipe, focusing on any bends or low points.
Do not use boiling water, hairdryers, naked flames or any tools that could damage the pipe. Once thawed, wait a few minutes and then try a single reset on the boiler to see if it will fire.
Perform a single boiler reset
Your Vaillant boiler will have a reset control, often on the front panel. Check your user manual for the exact location and instructions. Once you have checked for obvious issues such as gas supply or a frozen condensate, you can try one reset.
If the boiler lights and continues to run without showing F28 again, monitor it over the day. If the F28 fault comes back, or the boiler will not light at all, it is time to call in a professional.
Problems that must be left to an engineer
If the fault is not something simple outside the boiler, the cause of F28 is likely to be internal. These issues involve gas and combustion, so they are strictly for Gas Safe registered engineers only.
Typical engineer only causes of F28
Faulty gas valve or ignition components
Damaged or incorrectly positioned electrodes
Blocked or poorly installed flue or air intake
Burner faults or contamination inside the boiler
Low gas pressure or supply problems at the meter
These parts need specialist testing equipment and knowledge to diagnose correctly. Attempting to adjust gas valves or open the combustion chamber yourself is unsafe and may be illegal.
A qualified engineer will test gas pressures, check the ignition sequence, inspect the burner and electrodes, and verify that the flue is clear and providing the correct air flow.
Resetting your Vaillant boiler too often
It can be tempting to keep pressing reset when you are without heating or hot water, but repeated resets are not a fix. At best, they mask an underlying problem that needs proper diagnosis.
Constantly resetting can make the fault intermittent and harder for an engineer to trace. In some cases, it can also allow the boiler to keep trying to fire when there is a serious issue, which may not be safe.
If a single reset does not clear the F28 code, avoid repeatedly resetting the boiler. Make a note of what happened, such as any noises or behaviour on screen, and pass that information on to your engineer.
Staying safe if you suspect a gas issue
If at any point you smell gas, do not try to reset the boiler again or light any flames. Do not operate electrical switches, smoke, or use mobile phones near the suspected leak.
Turn off the gas at the meter if it is safe to do so, open doors and windows, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately from a safe location.
If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds or shows a warning, switch off gas appliances if it is safe, ventilate the property, leave the building and call the emergency services. Do not re enter until you are told it is safe.
Reducing the chance of F28 in future
Regular maintenance goes a long way towards preventing F28 and other boiler faults. During a service, an engineer will clean key components, check gas pressures and test the ignition and safety devices.
Booking routine boiler servicing helps catch small issues early, such as worn electrodes or partial blockages, before they develop into full ignition failures and F28 lockouts.
Need urgent help with an F28 fault?
If your Vaillant boiler is showing F28 and the simple checks above have not fixed it, it is time to get expert help. A prompt diagnosis will get your heating and hot water back on safely and can help protect your boiler from further damage.
To arrange an emergency breakdown visit, contact Beales Services on 02034880883 or book online via our Boiler Repair page. If your boiler is working again but has shown F28 more than once, it is wise to schedule a full check to keep everything running reliably.
